Thoughts on Graphic Design

Graphic design is creating visual elements, from shapes and objects to typography, to convey a message. In some references graphic design is described as assembling or putting together items to convey a message. That is too limiting when some projects demand starting with nothing or very little and creating something very powerful. For me there is little distinction between graphic design and graphic art. The line between art and design (if there is one) is formed because graphic design is  usually created to sell a product or service that isn’t the design itself. On the other hand, art isn’t necessarily created to sell anything, sometimes not even itself.

Graphic Design is Used Everywhere

From advertisements to signs, you can bet that a graphic designer was involved and you will likely notice when one wasn’t. Look around and you will see many things that are truly wonderful. To be effective, the design also has to be memorable.

Graphic Design and Branding

Branding and graphic design go hand in hand. Branding starts with the intention behind the brand. The most critical questions to answer are listed below. The time you spend on this is well worth it. There is a lot of information about branding which refers to social media and building your brand but, before you blast the world with the shotgun approach, you need to stop, and clearly define your brand.

Here are some questions to think about to help develop your brand. It would be good to have a trusted friend or small group of advisors to help you come up with the responses to these questions.

Who is your target market?

  • what do they read?
  • where do they hang out?
  • what do they eat?
  • what sports do they play?
  • what do they watch and listen to (tv shows, radio stations, movies etc.)?

What is the message you want to convey?

  • Make a list of qualities that you want people to associate with your brand, for
example: fast, trustworthy, affordable, strong, reliable, light, agile, efficient, smooth, clean, fresh.
  • Make a list of feelings you want to create in your clients and potential clients (happy, excited, confident, strong, satisfied, relaxed, free, healthy.)
  • Make a list of what you’d like existing customers to tell other people about your product or service. This usually is pretty close to the list of qualities above but it can help generate some more ideas.

What do you want to persuade people to do?

This seems simple enough but it isn’t just “buy your product” or “hire you.” For example Ford Motors wants you to buy their cars but to get you to buy their cars they want to persuade you to trust their brand and feel (young, sexy, smart, sophisticated…) in car model XYZ. The end result is that you buy the XYZ.

  • What do you want clients and potential clients to remember about your product or service?
  • What do you want clients to remember about you, your business or your salespeople?
  • What are the benefits of buying your product or service?
  • What is your tagline? Be sure this reinforces your brand by choosing one or two of the qualities listed above and keep it very short.

Once you’ve answered these questions the next step is to come up with your logo—a much easier task now that you are clear about what your brand represents.
